Foundry Projects Ltd offer a system to pass scrap through a refractory lined gas fired flame tunnel.

The base of the tunnel comprises of a vibratory feeder to provide the conveying motion and the top of the tunnel is a separate static hood independent of the feeder which incorporates high velocity gas flame burners pointing vertically downward onto the scrap under. Heating the scrap will melt any ice present and drive surface moisture away which could cause unwanted water/molten metal interaction.

In addition to drying charge materials, these units may also go a step further to preheat charge materials which would reduce the energy and time needed to melt them in a furnace.
